Our History

It all started with a tenacious but simple vision, which we still uphold in more than 700 destinations and 100 years later.

In March 1910, a young restorer named Louis Bush refinished the chassis of an old Mack truck, painted it blue and gray, and began offering City Tours around the city of Washington, DC. In that moment he couldn’t imagine that his efforts would help lay the foundation for one of the world’s leading city tour and excursion companies, known today as Gray Line.

By 1926, the Gray Line had expanded to other prosperous cities, like New York, Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco, as well as internationally to Toronto and Havana.

In peacetime after World War II, Harry J. Dooley, a former Gray Line employee, purchased the company and helped re-establish Gray Line Chicago. Dooley soon became president of the Gray Line and is today considered the father of the tourism industry.

With the advent of air travel and increased connectivity’s in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dooley expanded Gray Line’s market throughout the United States and established Gray Line Licenses in Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

The sudden growth in popularity of Hop-On-Hop-Off tourism helped establish Gray Line as a leader in the tourism industry for decades to come.

2011 marked an important milestone in history, as Gray Line celebrated its 101st anniversary, offering the best City Tours and excursions around the world.

Today, with more than 100 years of experience, at Gray Line Buenos Aires we want to honor the legacy of those who founded this company and dedicate all our efforts so that our Hop On Hop Off is up to our quality standards worldwide.
